~ Madison, Wisconsin - The Streets Division has announced its partnership with Sustain Dane to offer the popular Recycle Better classes online once again. The first opportunity to participate in the course will be on April 17, 2025.
The Recycle Better course aims to educate individuals on the proper way to recycle and why it is important. Not only does it provide knowledge and understanding, but it also empowers participants to share this information with their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers. Upon completion of the course, individuals can become Certified Recycling Stewards and help their community recycle better.
Since its inception in 2021, over 1,300 people have taken the Recycle Better course and have reached out to over 100,000 people through various outreach projects.
The online course consists of two 90-minute sessions. The first session will be held on April 17 from 12pm to 1:30pm with the second session taking place on Thursday, April 24 from 12pm to 1:30pm. Interested individuals can find more details on the Sustain Dane registration webpage or the Streets Division's website.

There is a small tuition fee of $15 for the course charged by Sustain Dane. However, if cost is a barrier for anyone interested in taking the course, they can contact Lorenza Zebell at Sustain Dane to inquire about having the fee waived.
For those unable to attend the afternoon class time, an evening offering will be available in July. Additionally, Sustain Dane has partnered with Latino Academy of Workforce Development to offer a Spanish version of the class on May 24 and May 31. Interested individuals can sign up at this link.
But why is recycling correctly so important? A recent sort of recyclables collected by the Streets Division revealed that almost one-fifth (18.7%) of what is placed into green recycling carts should not be there. This not only increases the costs for the city but also hinders the overall recycling system. The wrong materials in recycling carts can cause equipment jams and even pose a danger to workers, potentially leading to serious fires.

One of the reasons recycling can be confusing is that rules and regulations vary from state to state. This can be especially challenging for those who have recently moved to a new state. Internet searches and social media advice may not always provide accurate information for Madison, Wisconsin.
However, Wisconsin has strong and specific recycling mandates, and Madison offers many additional recycling opportunities as long as individuals follow the guidelines.
By taking the Recycle Better course, individuals can help their communities by sharing this valuable local information with their neighbors, coworkers, fellow congregants, and online communities. It is important to note that while becoming a Certified Recycling Steward is not necessary to learn about recycling in Madison, there are many free resources available such as magnets and decals on recycling carts.
