Madison: Firefighters Issue Safety Reminders Ahead Of July 4 Weekend

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, the City of Madison Fire Department reminds everyone to enjoy the holiday safely. Although fun for some, the use of fireworks is illegal in the City of Madison, Village of Shorewood Hills, Town of Madison, and Town of Blooming Grove.

Sparklers, snakes, snaps, caps, and party poppers may be used with caution during your holiday celebrations.

Here are some ways to prevent injury and fire this weekend:

• Attend a professional fireworks show. Do not handle fireworks yourself.
• Only use sparklers, snakes, snaps, and caps on non-combustible surfaces like concrete.
• Place used products in a bucket of water and soak them overnight before throwing them in the trash.
• Keep trash bins away from the house and garage, in case a fire does occur.
• Do not handle these products if you are under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

Last year, the Madison Fire Department responded to two home fires caused by fireworks that were not disposed properly. Both houses were significantly damaged, and one household was displaced from their home. So far in 2022, Madison Fire Department paramedics treated one person for serious injuries resulting from improper handling of fireworks.

Nationally, the use of fireworks and similar products is to blame for an estimated 19,000 fires each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Around 15,600 people were hospitalized in 2020 due to firework-related injuries.

Through the safe handling and proper disposal of legal fireworks products, the Madison Fire Department aims to prevent any other injuries or fires from occurring in our community this Fourth of July. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend!
