The new initiative gives student journalists and campus media programs a distribution channel they own outright, reaching students on the connected TV and mobile devices they already use, as it expands to universities across the South.

MILWAUKEE - WisconsinEagle -- PIQSTAR INC. PBC, a Wisconsin public benefit corporation, today announced the launch of RECLAIM THE SCREEN: Built Different, an initiative giving college and university media programs their own owned distribution channel on Exposure Plus TV, PIQSTAR's connected television and streaming platform.

Most campus media programs today post their work into someone else's platform: a university's own limited web page, a social feed governed by an algorithm they do not control, or a streaming app owned and operated by a third party. RECLAIM THE SCREEN gives student journalists, campus newsrooms, and media programs a channel of their own, reaching audiences on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Android TV, LG and Samsung smart TVs, and iOS and Android mobile devices.

The initiative responds to a shift already underway. A February 2026 Attest survey found that more than half of Gen Z respondents said they could go without cable television entirely, and industry data from CivicScience shows the same generation increasingly treats streaming, not cable, as their default way to watch. A 2025 NACE survey of more than 20,000 students and 237 employers also found a 24.6-point gap between how students rate their own communication skills and how employers rate them, a gap real-world newsroom experience is built to close. And Northwestern's Medill School reported in 2025 that 213 counties nationwide are now full news deserts, leaving roughly 50 million Americans with limited access to local news.

"Media programs are training the next generation of storytellers on tools they will lose access to the moment they graduate," said T Uganda Lawrence, Founder and CEO of PIQSTAR INC. PBC. "RECLAIM THE SCREEN gives a university a channel it owns, not a platform it borrows, so the students building it today can carry it forward as their own body of work."

RECLAIM THE SCREEN builds on PIQSTAR's broader civic media infrastructure, which also includes Utility Signal for municipalities and Local Signal for independent newsrooms and filmmakers, all distributed through Exposure Plus TV.
