The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division is seeking qualified candidates to work part-time as a School Crossing Guard. Crossing Guards help children safely cross the street at key locations and serve as a reminder to drivers of the presence of children and pedestrians.
"Being a Crossing Guard is a very rewarding job," said Virginia Kravik, Crossing Guard Supervisor. "Children and parents rely on the guards and we want to fill our Crossing Guard vacancies as soon as possible as we prepare for the return to in-person learning."
Although the time commitment is small, Crossing Guards typically work 10-15 hours per week depending on their assigned location, the position is integral to the safety of our community.
As of January 1, the Crossing Guard Program moved to Traffic Engineering from the Madison Police Department. This move was made to align the Crossing Guard Program with Traffic Engineering's work around traffic safety and Safe Routes to School, a program which supports and encourages walking and biking to school.

"I am excited to welcome the Crossing Guard Program to Traffic Engineering," said Yang Tao, City Traffic Engineer. "This program has a lot of synergy with other programs in Traffic Engineering, and this new structure will foster improved school traffic safety as Crossing Guards are the front line workers who are out each school day ensuring children can get to school safely and can provide us valuable input on coordinating needed improvements."
