~ The City of Madison Streets Division has announced that their fall yard waste and leaves collection will begin the week of October 8, 2023 for certain neighborhoods. Residents will receive three collection opportunities this fall, weather permitting. The exact dates when yard waste should be set out for pickup can be found on the Streets Division website, www.cityofmadison.com/yardwaste.
Yard waste collection crews will be collecting leaves, weeds, and other plant debris that have been raked or pulled from lawns or gardens. However, piles of brush and yard waste mixed together will not be picked up by the crews. The date given on the website is the day when residents should set out yard waste for pickup; crews will collect it from neighborhoods sometime during the normal work week following the set-out dates listed on the site.
Madison residents get three curbside collection opportunities for yard waste in the fall; after the third scheduled collection opportunity passes, curbside yard waste collection ends for the year until spring 2024. If residents miss their curbside pickup opportunities, they should take their material to a Streets Division drop-off site or compost their yard waste at home.

When setting out yard waste for collection, it should be placed at the street edge or on the terrace and kept at least four feet from obstructions like street signs, utility poles, mailboxes, trees, and parked cars that may hinder collection. If bagging leaves and yard waste, compostable paper leaf and lawn bags should be used and kept open so crews can see what is inside; other bags are acceptable if they are kept open as well but crews may need to rip or slice open plastic bags to get the yard waste out and leave split bags behind at the curb.
The Streets Division drop-off sites will also accept yard waste; locations are different this year so verify location and hours before loading your vehicle at www.cityofmadison.com/DropOffSites. Additional information about all Streets Division services can be found at www.cityofmadison.com/streets while a short how-to video about yard waste collection can be viewed on City of Madison YouTube page.
