~ Madison, WI- The City of Madison is seeking nominations for its annual Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award. This award, named after the late Jeffrey Clay Erlanger, recognizes individuals who have shown leadership skills while making a positive impact on the community.
Jeffrey Clay Erlanger was known for his integrity, passion, intelligence, and civility. Despite being a quadriplegic due to complications from a spinal tumor discovered in infancy, he dedicated his life to public service and promoting constructive advocacy and civil debate. He passed away on June 10, 2007.
Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed her admiration for past recipients of the award and the impact they have had on the community. "We have many area residents who have shown leadership through quiet determination, much like Jeff Erlanger. It's been an honor to recognize them and celebrate them," she said.
The award has been expanded this year to recognize residents of the Madison metropolitan area who share Jeff Erlanger's dedication to public policy, civility, and individual rights. The recipient will be an individual who exemplifies these values in their daily life and has made a significant impact on the community.

In addition to recognition, both the recipient and their nominator will be able to designate a non-profit charity to receive $250 each.
To be eligible for nomination, individuals must be adults residing in the Madison metropolitan area and have demonstrated leadership in public advocacy with a focus on constructive civil debate and fairness. They must also show dedication to treating others with civility, respect, and dignity.
Nominations must be submitted by November 3rd using the nomination application available at the Mayor's Office or via email at madisonmayor@cityofmadison.com with "Erlanger Award" in the subject line. The selection committee will not conduct additional research beyond what is provided in the nomination form.
The committee responsible for selecting the award recipient is composed of five individuals, including a member or representative of the Erlanger family, a representative of the Mayor, the Common Council President, and two resident members.
