~ The City of Madison has released a new map to help residents understand areas that are prone to street flooding during storm events. The map, created by the City's Engineering Division, aims to simplify the information and make it easier for community members to identify areas that should be avoided when driving or parking during extreme weather.
This new map, which can be viewed on the City's website, complements the more detailed watershed flood risk maps already available. It is part of the city's efforts to increase awareness and preparedness for severe weather, especially as Wisconsin Severe Weather Awareness Week approaches from April 7-11, 2025.
According to the Engineering Division, understanding flooding is crucial for residents in Madison. Flash flooding can occur anywhere in the city when the stormwater infrastructure is unable to handle the amount of water falling. Additionally, lake level flooding can happen when there is an excess of water flowing into the Yahara chain of lakes system.

To further educate and assist residents in preparing for severe weather events, the Engineering Division has a variety of resources available on their Flooding website. These include not only maps but also information on how to report flooding and links to emergency management resources provided by Wisconsin Emergency Management.
The City encourages all residents to take advantage of these resources and add them to their knowledge base as active weather season begins. By understanding and being prepared for potential flooding, community members can help keep themselves and others safe during severe weather events.
