Madison Water Utility takes the quality of the city's water very seriously, routinely collecting more samples and running far more tests than are required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Madison's drinking water system is made up of over 900 miles of water main, 32 reservoirs and 21 active wells that draw water from a plentiful sandstone aquifer below the city. All Madison Water Utility facilities are monitored 24 hours-a-day, and drinking water safety tests are conducted daily at every operating well and reservoir in Madison.
