This morning, the CDC and FDA recommended pausing use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, after six reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Public Health Madison & Dane County will follow this recommendation until further information is provided.
These adverse events appear to be extremely rare and are currently only documented in six cases out of about 7 million vaccines given, but the pause shows how seriously vaccine safety is taken.
We encourage everyone who gets a vaccine to use v-safe, the after vaccination health tracker that tells the CDC about vaccine side-effects.

Out of an abundance of caution, anyone who has received the J&J vaccine should monitor for the following symptoms for 3 weeks after receiving the vaccine: severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath.
If people have symptoms or health problems that are of concern at any time following COVID-19 vaccination, they should contact a healthcare provider.
Again, it's important to point out that these adverse events appear to be extremely rare.
Note: Individuals with appointments to receive Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week at Alliant Energy Center will be contacted to reschedule their vaccine appointment.
