WAUKESHA, Wis. - WisconsinEagle -- For two decades, AllWriters' Workplace & Workshop has been a part of downtown Waukesha and on Friday, January 31, this local studio with an international reputation celebrates 20 years of fostering writers with a special event at the E.B. Shurts building, located in Waukesha's Fox River Sanctuary.
For award-winning author and studio owner Kathie Giorgio, the event location has a special meaning. The Shurts building is where the author taught her very first writing class 30 years ago for students of the City of Waukesha's Parks & Recreation educational programs.
In 2005, Giorgio fulfilled her dream of having her own writing studio. She established herself in downtown Waukesha, playing a part in the revitalization of the area. Since then, Kathie and her studio have become anchors of a thriving local arts scene, hosting frequent reading events, annual retreats, and helping sponsor the Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books, an event Giorgio also has been a part of organizing each year since the event launched in 2010.

To celebrate AllWriters' 20th year, Giorgio will be hosting a reading event featuring novelist Carrie Newberry and poet Richard Hedderman. Both are AllWriters' faculty members. Also reading will be publishing students Michele Feeney and LaShaun Taylor. Special guest Philip Chard (psychotherapist, book author and "Out of My Mind" columnist) will also be on hand to read from his forthcoming memoir A Slow Backpacker.
The evening will include a talk and reading by Kathie Giorgio, who will also give a special reading in honor of her husband, mystery author Michael Giorgio (A Week of Criminal Happiness). A longtime faculty member, Michael died as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by a car while crossing the street in January 2024. He was a vibrant part of the writing community and is greatly missed. Kathie will read from the novel he was working on prior to the accident.
