~ The City of Madison has taken a major step towards a more sustainable future with the release of their 2024 Sustainability Plan. This comprehensive plan outlines strategies to reduce climate pollution, prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate change, improve environmental quality, and prioritize the health and well-being of all residents.

After over three years of work led by the Sustainable Madison Committee and the City's Sustainability and Resilience Program, the plan was unanimously adopted by the Common Council on August 6, 2024. This update is a continuation of the city's ongoing efforts to promote climate equity and environmental justice.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed her excitement for the plan, stating that it represents another step forward in ensuring that Madison remains a vibrant and sustainable place for generations to come. She looks forward to working with city staff, partner organizations, and the community to implement the plan and achieve their sustainable vision for Madison.

The city's commitment to sustainability dates back to March 2017 when they became the 25th city in North America to set a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy and zero-net carbon emissions for city operations by 2030 and community-wide by 2050. This goal was set in response to scientists' warnings about the urgent need for action to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Unfortunately, recent years have only confirmed these warnings as global temperatures continue to rise.

Alder Nikki Conklin emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, stating that "we cannot delay confronting this threat - our health, safety, and economy depend on swift and decisive action." She also highlighted how Madison faces increasing risks as temperatures rise and severe weather events become more frequent.

The Sustainability Plan includes 24 goals organized into eight elements: Quality, Affordable Housing; Resilient City Design & Infrastructure; Renewable Energy and Decarbonization; Sustainable Transportation; Clean, Abundant Water; Zero Waste; Healthy Ecosystems; and a Vibrant, Green Economy. Each goal is accompanied by specific actions and metrics to track progress. The plan also highlights current initiatives related to sustainability and climate action.

Alder Nasra Wehelie praised the plan for its commitment to equity, justice, education, and public health. She stated that it not only addresses environmental challenges but also ensures that efforts deliver equitable benefits to all members of the community.

Community engagement was a crucial part of the plan's development process. This included an online survey with over 1,600 responses in four languages, pop-up events at local markets and festivals with over 600 participants, and seven focus groups with diverse stakeholders. These efforts were supported by a social media campaign and signage throughout the community.

The plan also builds upon previous sustainability plans adopted by the city in 2004 and 2011, as well as the 100% Renewable Madison report adopted in 2018.

Alder Tag Evers highlighted Madison's strong foundation of climate and sustainability leadership and expressed excitement for the benefits that implementing this plan will bring to the city's health and well-being.

The 2024 Sustainability Plan is available on the City of Madison's website, including executive summaries in Spanish, Chinese, and Hmoob. With this comprehensive plan in place, Madison is taking significant strides towards a more sustainable future for all its residents.
