~ The City of Madison is preparing for a respectful transition at the intersection of Williamson Street and Baldwin Street, following the death of Corey Ruiz. The community has expressed a desire to preserve artwork and memorial items at the site, and the City intends to honor these requests while working with Corey's family and the broader community on a long-term plan for a memorial.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Criminal Division Investigation (DCI) is conducting an independent investigation into Corey Ruiz's death. While the Madison Police Department is fully cooperating, they are not in charge of the investigation and do not have the authority to make any arrest decisions or recommendations for charges. This responsibility lies with the Wisconsin Department of Justice and the Dane County District Attorney.

In the coming days and weeks, there will be opportunities for people to engage in discussions about criminal justice reform at both the local and state level. The City remains committed to creating opportunities for dialogue and change within its own jurisdiction. Additionally, there are many existing nonprofits, faith groups, and networks advocating for criminal justice reform, policing reform, and alternative emergency response systems that people can engage with.

While there is grassroots energy to support this community, it is important that it is directed towards bolstering existing services rather than undermining them. The City and County have been working diligently for years to improve services for those experiencing homelessness, including providing substance abuse and mental health treatment as well as advocating for more housing options. The upcoming opening of Bartillon men's shelter, a partnership between Dane County, City of Madison, Porchlight, and Shelter Friends of Dane County, can serve as an anchor for these services with community support.

However, it must be acknowledged that occupying this intersection is not a safe or sustainable solution for those experiencing homelessness or the surrounding community. It also does not have any impact on expediting the independent investigation or changing state law. At this point, it is causing more harm than good and is distracting from the necessary dialogue and organizing needed for lasting change. The barricades must be taken down to allow people to access their homes and jobs, and businesses to open.
