~ As the fall season approaches, residents of Madison, Wisconsin can expect to see the familiar sight of leaves and yard waste piling up on their curbs. The city's Streets Division has announced that the fall yard waste and leaves collection for 2025 will begin in October.
According to the press release, residents will have three guaranteed opportunities to set out their yard waste for pickup this fall. However, the exact dates for each neighborhood may vary. Some neighborhoods will have their first set-out opportunity on Sunday, October 5th while others will have a different date.
To find out when they should set out their yard waste, residents are advised to visit the Yard Waste Website or contact the Streets Division. By entering their address into the form on the website, they can easily find out the upcoming set-out date for their neighborhood.
The press release also clarifies what materials will be collected by yard waste crews. This includes leaves, weeds, pumpkins, and other plant debris that has been raked or pulled from lawns or gardens. It is important to note that yard waste is not the same as brush and any piles mixed together will not be picked up by crews.

Residents are reminded to place their yard waste at the street edge or on the terrace and not in the street itself. It should also be kept at least four feet away from any obstructions such as street signs, utility poles, mailboxes, trees, stumps, or parked cars. If using bags for yard waste, it is recommended to use compostable paper leaf and lawn bags and keep them open so crews can easily see what is inside.
The press release also addresses when crews will collect yard waste after it has been set out. While the website provides a set-out date for each neighborhood, this is not necessarily when crews will pick up the material.
