~ The City of Madison Streets Division has announced the start of their fall yard waste and leaves collection beginning the week of October 8, 2023. Residents will have three collection opportunities this fall, weather permitting. The exact dates for when to set out leaves and yard waste for pickup can be found on the Streets Division website, www.cityofmadison.com/yardwaste, as well as on the new map lookup tool.

Yard waste collection crews will be collecting leaves, weeds, and other plant debris that have been raked or pulled from lawns or gardens. It is important to note that yard waste is not the same as brush and piles of brush and yard waste mixed together will not be picked up by the yard waste collection crews. The date given on the website is when residents should set out their yard waste for pickup; this is not necessarily when it will be collected by crews. Crews will collect material from neighborhoods sometime during the normal work week following the set-out dates listed on the website in order to ensure that material does not sit on terraces for more than one week at most.

When setting out yard waste for collection, residents should place it at the street edge or on terraces but not in streets. It should also be kept at least four feet away from obstructions such as street signs, utility poles, mailboxes, trees, and parked cars in order to facilitate collection. If bagging leaves and yard waste, compostable paper leaf and lawn bags should be used and kept open so crews can see what is inside; other bags are acceptable if they are kept open as well but may need to be ripped or sliced open by crews who will then leave them behind at curbside.

Residents also have other options besides curbside pickup such as composting their own yard waste to make an excellent soil amendment for next year's lawns and gardens; free guides on how to compost are available at City of Madison libraries with additional resources found on Streets Division's website. Leaves can also be mulched in place with a lawnmower which helps manage them while improving lawns and helping lakes. Drop-off sites are also available with locations and hours listed on www.cityofmadison.com/DropOffSites .
