~ Shannon Davis, a plan reviewer for the Building Inspection Division of the Madison Municipal Building, is the first woman to hold her position. Every day, she is presented with plans from hundreds of different people, from homeowners to master carpenters and architects. Her job is to ensure that all plans are safe and healthy for housing in the City of Madison.
Davis moved to Madison from California about 15 years ago and worked on a raspberry farm before realizing she needed a career change. She went back to school at Madison College's Construction and Remodeling Program and learned a lot about building and trades in general. Despite not having any experience with tools prior to this program, Davis was determined to prove that she could do this job just as well as anyone else.

Davis believes that cultural norms have evolved over the years but there is still room for improvement when it comes to thinking more openly about gender roles in construction. She encourages people to give their daughters the opportunity to learn how to use tools like saws and hammers if they are interested in doing so.
Davis started working at the City of Madison CDA (Community Development Authority) in 2013 as a Housing Specialist before moving into Building Inspection in 2018. She hopes that other women will realize they are not stuck in any role that someone has set for them and can always make a change regardless of their age or background.
Finally, Davis emphasizes the importance of being open-minded when it comes to plans both professionally and personally. She encourages people not be afraid of admitting when they don't know something but instead take it as an opportunity to learn something new.
