Madison Declares Snow Emergency; Overnight Alternate Side Parking Rules In Effect Citywide

A snow emergency has also been declared for the evening of January 29, 2023. Alternate side parking rules will be in effect for the entire City of Madison for the next two evenings to assist with clearing the roads.

Clean-up from yesterday's significant snowstorm will continue through the day and into the night. Additional details about the snowplowing operation can be found in the Snow Plowing Updates at www.cityofmadison.com/Winter.

All Madison residents are encouraged to choose off-street parking options for their vehicles and trailers. Fewer obstacles in the road means plowing operations will be safer, faster, and more complete.

Do not place your trash and recycling carts in the street for pickup in the days ahead. Carts in the street gutter are an obstruction for plows as they continue clean-up operations. Collection carts should be in your driveway apron or on a cleared area of the terrace.

Parking Rules during a Declared Snow Emergency
The snow emergency declaration means overnight alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect for the next two nights for the entire City of Madison, including the Snow Emergency Zone. Keep in mind snow emergency declaration can be extended should conditions require it.

During the overnight hours for the next two nights, the Streets Division will be working to push back snow to the curb in an effort to keep streets wide and safe for all roadway users.
Violators of daytime parking restrictions and the overnight alternate side parking rules can be ticketed and may be towed.

Parking on the Street Tonight (Sunday, 1/29/2023 into early morning of Monday, 1/30/23)
All residents who must park on the street tonight (the evening January 29 into the early morning hours of Monday, January 30) need to have their vehicles on the EVEN house numbered side of the street between the hours of 1am and 7am.

Parking on the Street Tomorrow Night (Monday, 1/30/23 into the early morning of Tuesday, 1/31/23)
Vehicles parked on the street tomorrow night (the evening of January 30 into the early morning of January 31) should be on the ODD house-numbered side of the street between the hours of 1am and 7am.

Other Parking Information
Parking will be available in the cashiered sections of city-owned ramps in the downtown area. During a declared snow emergency you can park for no charge at the City ramps from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. If you enter before 9 p.m. or leave after 7 a.m. you are liable for any parking charges before 9 p.m. and from 7 a.m. until the time you leave.

When parking in the ramps overnight, do not park on the top level so this area can be plowed. Be aware that vehicles stored in city ramps longer than 48 hours are subject to being ticketed and towed. Meters in lots and ramps are enforced 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Parking is also available at the Brittingham Park Shelter parking lot off of W. Washington Ave.

Why You Should Follow Alternate Side Parking
Following alternate side parking keeps the roads open, wide, and safe for all roadway users – cars, bicycles, emergency vehicles, refuse/recycling collection, and so on.

Follow Posted Parking Restrictions
Streets Division plows also use the posted parking restrictions during the work week to push snow from the road to the curb. Be sure you are carefully following those no parking signs during the week or you may also be ticketed or towed.
