~ As a journalist, it is important to keep the community informed about the latest developments and initiatives that impact their health and well-being. Parks and open spaces play a crucial role in promoting community health, wellness, and vitality. That is why the City of Madison has developed the Park and Open Space Plan (POSP), which guides policies, planning, and resource allocations to support decision-makers, staff, and residents.

The POSP is a comprehensive plan that takes into account public input, data, and GIS analysis to inform park development, management, and system-wide strategies. It undergoes public review and is approved by relevant authorities every five years to ensure responsiveness to changing needs. This plan is also vital for securing federal and state grants that are critical for implementing its goals.

In 2024, the City of Madison Parks Division worked with a consulting planning team led by MSA Professional Services to develop the 2025-2030 Park & Open Space Plan. The process included various forms of public engagement such as open houses, targeted outreach and focus groups, a survey conducted by UW Survey Center, as well as extensive committee and staff work. The draft plan is now ready for review.

The community is invited to view the draft 2025-2030 Park & Open Space Plan at an upcoming event hosted by the City of Madison Parks Division. This event will take place on Thursday, June 26 from 3:30-6:30pm at Parks Lakeside Offices located at 330 E. Lakeside St. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the draft plan, explore its chapters, and meet with staff. For more information about this project, please visit the POSP project page.
