MADISON, Wis. ~ Madison Police Department Engages with Community at National Night Out Celebration
The Madison Police Department had a successful turnout at this year's National Night Out celebration, with thousands of community members in attendance. The event, which is held in communities across the country, aims to promote police engagement with neighbors.
In Madison, two events were held in each of the city's six patrol districts, and a larger event was held at Warner Park before the Madison Mallards game on Tuesday. Officers took the opportunity to grill out, play games, and deepen connections with the people they serve.
Captain Diana Nachtigal, who oversees community outreach efforts for the department, emphasized the importance of building relationships between law enforcement and the community. "We all wear a uniform with a badge, but we are also human beings," she said. "Most of us become first responders to help people, but we also want to give back to our community."

Attendees were also able to interact with various MPD specialty groups such as Mounted Patrol, K9 team, Mental Health Unit, and Special Weapons and Tactics Team. This provided an opportunity for community members to learn more about these units and their roles within the department.
National Night Out is typically held on the first Tuesday in August and serves as a reminder that public safety is a community effort. Acting Chief John Patterson stated that "the best way to make our city safer is by getting to know our neighbors." The Madison Police Department hopes that events like this will continue to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community they serve.
